Wilderness First Responder Bridge Course

Registration

  • This includes a mandatory NWTRPA membership fee and the event registration fee.

The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Bridge course upgrades the Wilderness Advanced First Aid to a WFR in 4 days. If you work or recreate on the land or in communities where access to medical care is delayed or communication is unreliable, this course is for you! It is the industry standard for professional guides, trip leaders, search and rescue team members, outdoor recreationists, and international travelers.

Participants are responsible for their snacks and lunch. We will take a lunch break from 12:00pm – 1:00pm.

Sample Syllabus

Day 1: Registration/Introduction; Review Pre-course Study Packet; Patient Assessment System; Circulatory/Respiratory Systems; PAS Drills; Basic Life Support (Healthcare Provider-level CPR)

Day 2: Quiz/Case Studies Review; Nervous System; Spine Management; Musculoskeletal; PAS Drill; Dislocations; Patient Immobilization; Litter Carries and Belays; PAS Drills

Day 3: Quiz/Case Studies Review; Emergency Childbirth; Allergy & Anaphylaxis; Altitude or Diving; Frostbite; Near Drowning; Search and Rescue; Traction Splints; Improvised Litters; Simulation and Debrief

Day 4: Case Study Review; Backcountry Medicine; Toxins; Medical Kits; PAS Drills; Written Test; Skills Testing; Conclusion

Cost

Non-members: $400 + tax

Members: $350 + tax

*Limited bursaries for registration fees are available to On the Land Collaborative grant recipients

To be considered fully registered we require 100% payment. 

Prerequisites

  • Current Wilderness Advanced First Aid certification within three years of the course
  • Students will have access to pre-course assignments 2-4 weeks prior to course. Students should complete study guide in preparation for the course. Instructor will collect at the beginning of the course.
  • Participants must be at least sixteen years old. Those under eighteen years of age require the written consent of a parent or guardian

What to Bring

  • Water bottle/Coffee Mug
  • Layered clothing and gear to spend hours on the land (snow pants, boots, neck warmer, hat, mitts, jacket, warm socks)
  • Clothing you don't mind getting dirty
  • Notebook and pencil
  • Any outdoor gear is greatly appreciated, such as skis, snowshoes, tarps, sleeping mats, etc. (only if possible)

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your registration, the NWTRPA must be notified of the cancellation by email. Cancellation charges will be effective from the date and time we receive email notification as follows:

  • Before 3 days of workshop date – 85% refund
  • Within 24 hours of workshop date – No refund

Disclaimer

The NWT Recreation and Parks Association reserves the right to cancel any program or workshop. If such a situation arises, you will be notified as soon as possible (by email or phone call). In the event of a cancellation, you will be refunded all monies paid.
