    The Lake Canoe Instructor course teaches participants how to teach introduction lake canoe skills courses. Successful participants will also be able to teach Waterfront clinic and Canoeing basics course and assist on Intermediate Lake skill or instructor courses. If you are interested in leading canoe trips, building canoeing skills in your community and/or region, or interested in improving your own canoeing and teaching skills, this is the course for you! It is the industry standard in Canada for guides, trip leaders, and outdoor recreationists, as it is a nationally recognized certification. Successful participants will receive two certifications: Intermediate Lake Canoe Skills and Tandem Lake Canoe Instructor.

    Cost

    Collaborative Grant Recipients: Free

    Non-members: $150 + GST

    Members: $100 + GST

    Registration Deadline: August 16, 2020

    Prerequisites

    • Must live in Yellownknife, Dettah, N'Dilo, or Behchoko to avoid the spread of COVID-19 to remote communities. See the NWTRPA's current policy on programming during COVID-19 here.
    • Participants must be at least sixteen years old. Those under eighteen years of age require the written consent of a parent or guardian.

    What to Bring

    • Water bottle/Coffee Mug
    • Layered clothing and gear in a waterproof bag to spend time on the water
    • Clothing you don't mind getting dirty or wet
    • Notebook and pencil/pen
    Cancellation Policy

    If you need to cancel your registration, the NWTRPA must be notified of the cancellation by email. Cancellation charges will be effective from the date and time we receive email notification as follows:

    • Before 3 days of workshop date – 85% refund
    • Within 24 hours of workshop date – No refund

    Disclaimer

    The NWT Recreation and Parks Association reserves the right to cancel any program or workshop. If such a situation arises, you will be notified as soon as possible (by email or phone call). In the event of a cancellation, you will be refunded all monies paid.

    These monthly learning and sharing circles will be held for Elders in Motion leaders to support one another. Monthly webinars will allow EIM leaders to share experiences, ideas, and learn from one another.



    Webinars will be 75 minutes, and each will include 25-minute presentations on topics of interest or professional development.

    Participation is free, and leaders can attend as many as they like. Leaders will be provided with a program pack of equipment if they attend 3/6 of the webinars!

    Session 1: Wednesday, September 2 @ 1:30pm

    • Introductions
    • 25 minute presentation: Let’s Get Together! Including ALL generations in programming
    This session will guide participants through the Intergenerational Programming Toolkit. We will talk about how to create Elders in Motion programs that include all generations. Having more people from different ages makes things more fun for everyone!

    Session 2: Wednesday, October 7 @ 1:30pm

    • Introductions
    • 25 minute presentation: Assessments and Screening: Why, how, and when should we do them?
    Knowing which Elders in our community are at a higher risk of falling is important. If we know who is struggling with strength, mobility, or anything else, we can create a program that helps them to regain their strength or maintain their mobility. This session will take about the best ways to do a screening with Elders to get the most out of your EIM program.

    Session 3: Wednesday, November 4 @ 1:30pm

    • Introductions
    • 25 minute presentation: How to create movement activities Elders will enjoy!
    Many activity and recreation leaders struggle to motivate their participants, no matter what age they are. This session will give us some tips and tricks on how to create activities and movement sessions that Elders will look forward to.

    Session 4: Wednesday, December 2 @ 1:30pm

    • Introductions
    • 25 minute presentation: Elders programming on the land

    Indoor program rooms and gyms are a great place to exercise, but there are SO many spaces all around us that are perfect for being active. This session will talk about how to take your program outside and on the land.

    Session 5: Wednesday, January 6 @ 1:30pm

    • Introductions
    • 25 minute presentation: Safety, Learned Helplessness and Elder Abuse—How are they related?
    Safety is a huge concern when we are creating Elders in Motion programs. This session will help you to see the safety risks that participants in your classes might be showing you without even knowing it. How can we empower Elders to be more safe at home and when they’re out and about.

    • 25 minute presentation: Practice with your Peers!

    Sometimes all we need to finally start that exercise program you’ve been planning is a little practice. In this session, we will practice our teaching techniques and help one another out with tips, tricks and ideas from our own community programs.
